I live in a council flat and turned a grass verge into a garden and filled it with Dahlias. I’m on my third year. I have over 20 I would say varieties, the only problem with them is the wind and it’s a shame they flower at the end of summer but there still awesome.

  5. DMESSER on December 13, 2020 at 9:30 pm

How do you stop slugs and snails eating them?

  6. Dahliaholic on December 13, 2020 at 9:34 pm

If it really is dahlia virus the ground should not be contaminated so long as you remove all the tubers

  7. Wave Storm on December 13, 2020 at 9:35 pm

    Prettiest compost

  8. Sue Emery on December 13, 2020 at 9:36 pm

    Stunning!

You cut out the growth point of young plants to make them bush out. Later in the season when the plants are flowering, if you take off the two side buds and just leave the centre bud, you get a bigger flower.

  10. Dahliaholic on December 13, 2020 at 9:39 pm

Yes, I do dig them up. See my video “How Geoff and Heather grow dahlias”.

Wow they say cut out the middle stem , but he cuts off the two outside stems so his blooms are bigger. I’m so confused now lol.

  21. Lesley Johnson on December 13, 2020 at 9:50 pm

What do you do in the winter, I was told I would have to dig them up for the winter. Surely you don’t dig all of those up, what’s your secret, lovely garden though

  22. Joan Hodgson on December 13, 2020 at 9:54 pm

This year I have a virus in my Dahlias.
I don’t know what has caused it & will have to replace next year & start from scratch.
I am concerned that the ground will be contaminated where the Dahlias have been.

I’m told that there are earwig insecticides available in the USA, but I don’t know of any in the UK. So I’m afraid there’s no easy way apart from vigilance!
