How to Use Peat Pellet Kits for Seed Starting Cucumbers, Tomatoes & Peppers: No Grow-Lights Needed!
This is part of my 2020 seed starting series. I show you how to set up and use compressed peat pellet kits to start cucumbers, tomatoes and peppers. I discuss a no grow-light method and if you use grow-lights, how you can best use them. I also discuss when to start cucumbers, tomatoes and peppers indoors and why.

Great video!!
Thank you for this video. Do you wait until the wet peat pellets cool from the boiling water before you place the seeds in them? Thanks.
I have a dilemma as a new gardener. I just seeded Cucumbers and Goji’s a week ago under grow lights before I learned not to do it too early from last frost date. Do you have any suggestions on how to keep the sprouts going "alive" till planting outdoors?
how often do you water
👍
What about watering? How often and how much (average)
Does the boiling water hurt "diminish" the nutrients?
How often do you water the seed starter
Hi can i use this method to germinate flower seeds too?
I’m guessing they have to cool down first, before I plant the seeds in them, right?
How long to give them water?
beginner here … if i bring them out should it be under direct sunlight or not?
How does one water these after the seeds sprout, I’m having trouble 😅. Seems like it’s not as easy as a conventional seed cells I’ve had luck with in the past
Hey Gary – what grow lights would you recommend for new seedlings vs. once they’re more established? Thanks!
Thanks you so much for very good idea
Awesome awesome video! Very informative and knowledgable information. Thank you!!
Did you use any liquid fertilizer..?
Video was awesome but it would have been nice if you would have gone into watering, how to water it, how much to water and how frequently to water it
I’ve never started seeds indoors and never used the peat pods, so this video was very informative. Will you tell me how to water these trays please? From the top or in the tray to be absorbed from the bottom up? Also, approximately how wet to keep them and approximately how often will they need water? Thanks again for a very helpful video!
The small pellets work great for hydro starts, just peel off the net.
The ads are germinating on this one
What does it mean when you say thin them to a single plant? I’m new to this! Also, do you have any tips for the white webs that I seem to get daily over some of my pods? Is that fungus?
thank you for the great information! I am making 40 small garden boxes with a class, and this is who we will start our seeds perfect video!
Is it just me or has adds on older youtube videos gotten worse?
how often water require in this process ?
I have had low.germination because im using old.seeds up..and recycling these..or.trying to..my johny jump ups seem to be able to store really.well so ive been transferring tiny seed starts into them
I love the steam!
I subscribed as soon as you said you were in MD. Finally someone who has to deal with MD’s dysfunctional weather
They look like blood sausages..
I hope mine take this year every year my garden dies outside. I try too. I d. K. 💔I had a bumper mater crop then my green thumb went away. I mean I had 700 maters. I shared I was thinking I was pro. Every garden since died. 💔
How long should I keep them in the water??
I would love to see a video that shows the whole process from start to finish. The instructions on the back of the box are horrible. Step three says to place in a sunny location after all seeds have sprouted and step five says to harden off plants by placing them in shade outside for several days gradually exposing them to sunlight!
It’s day 4 now since I’ve done this, the cucumbers were already 2 to 3 inches, tomatoes barely popped out lastnight, still waiting for the bells and jalapeno…. I’m new to this too so hope all goes well
When should I watering these bad boys?
Looks nice and easy 😂
But what about fertilization. Is it necessary?
Excellent, very informative.
Should we water the plants ?
what an amazing tip to label the trays. I have always failed at this task!
Looks like you didn’t use the lid. Ok to remove my lid? I’ve had it on for 6 days.
I found the plastic on the outside does not allow roots to grow through it.
Thank you. I have had green and white mold before and I was very concerned. I was wondering about the netting. In the future, I will remove the netting before transplanting or potting up.
Sprinkle cinnamon on top of your pellets after you plant the seeds. It will keep most of the mold, algae, etc from forming. Been doin it for years.
So if my house is around 78 degrees should I keep the lid off and my seed heat mat off as well?

Great video just what I was looking for!
Just started my seeds with small pellets (sungold tomatoes, jalapenos and jimmy nardello sweet peppers). The tomatoes sprouted in like 5 days they are leggy but they literally just sprouted. The instructions say to prop the lid open once sone sprout, how best should i prop open the lid or should i remove it entirelt?
Sir, do we have to water the pellets everyday until seeds germinate???
Thank you very much, Gary.
Great video Gary. I love using the jiffy pellets.
Today I put Peruvian chili, my question is when do I put water on it again? when will the gate open ??
