Great video. Even though this was done per Leon’s instructions I followed your video to do mine. Only thing I did different was put my pvc tube in first. Thanks for your insights

Does anyone know if self wicking pots are good for blueberry plants? Or would it cause the roots to remain too wet?

  6. Dan Buell on April 24, 2021 at 11:57 pm

How does the root wick the water through the landscaping material>

  7. Diane Wyatt on April 24, 2021 at 11:57 pm

Can anyone clarify/explain so I can understand…. For newly planted tomato or pepper plants for example, how do the roots reach to the water reservoir for the wicking process to work? I would truly appreciate the clarification….

  12. Laura Holzler on April 25, 2021 at 12:00 am

So why wouldn’t you just wrap the pipes?

Has anyone ever used metal food grade bins? I can get 55 food grade drums for $5 each and I was thinking about sawing them in half to make the bins for this. I’m just concerned if metal will be a problem for the plants.

  19. Bonnie Rand on April 25, 2021 at 12:07 am

Hi Mr Daniel how many tomatoes can you plant in a tub?I made 9 tubs up and used corn sacks to put my pipes in and slid my pvc in the opened end of the sack then cut 4 slits in the under side of the sack tucked it all down in the tubs and fiiled the tubs with composted saw dust and organicacs seem to work fine.

  21. Brandon Brooks on April 25, 2021 at 12:10 am

Would this concept work in a 5-gallon bucket?

  22. Liz Fisher on April 25, 2021 at 12:10 am

Great idea. But how much did each wicking tub totally cost?

  23. K-Lee on April 25, 2021 at 12:12 am

Can i use pieces of cheap tarp, the kind that is sold at Walmart instead of landscape fabric (which is hard to find where I live and much more costly.)

Does BLACK tubs make the plants TOO HOT in the summer?

  25. harold Denton on April 25, 2021 at 12:13 am

Thank you for telling us about Leon’s YouTube channel. I am learning a whole lot from his and your video about constructing self wicking plant tubs. Now I know why my tomato plants were drying up and dieing in my 5 gallon tubs! I wasn’t using empty bottles of empty gallon jugs in the bottom of my 5 gallon buckets.

  26. Gary Ballard on April 25, 2021 at 12:16 am

How big is you’re high tunnel

  27. Debbie Blakley on April 25, 2021 at 12:17 am

I love the red buckets! Where did you get those? How many gals are those?
Also, I have a technical question…. Some folks say that is not good to plant in plastic as the plants absorb the chemicals that come from the plastic when it’s heated and cooled. Do they call those PABA maybe? And is it or isn’t it safe to plant inside plastic?

  28. pwelch5944 on April 25, 2021 at 12:20 am

Is your 6 inch black pipe perforated?

  29. Jesus Child on April 25, 2021 at 12:20 am

plastic is not good for health。better not to use it to grow vegetable and make compose。better to use food safe glass to make compose and use clay pot or untreated wood to grow vegetable

Thanks for giving a shout-out to Gardening with Leon! A tip for the mixing of the fill, if you have a cement mixer, the process goes a lot faster.

PVC and drainage tube plastic will leach chemicals into that beautiful soil. I don’t know if your tubs are food grade plastic, but I am thinking no. I am searching non leaching plastic for this design.

  35. Diane Desormier on April 25, 2021 at 12:28 am

Where can I get ahold of those tubs your using ? Love the red tubs. Can I order them ?

  36. Michael Wood on April 25, 2021 at 12:32 am

So this is how farmers used to grow hundreds of acres of food?

  37. Betty Barton on April 25, 2021 at 12:32 am

Are those pipe perforated? Could you put pantyhose on them instead of fabric?

  38. j majick on April 25, 2021 at 12:34 am

tip when drilling plastic. after piercing the plastic, drill in reverse. Makes for a nice clean hole with less burs and squiggly pieces.

  39. TellyMonster on April 25, 2021 at 12:34 am

So where do you get tubs like those?

This video was so helpful!!! Thanks for posting all this great information.

  45. Renee Gish on April 25, 2021 at 12:42 am

How would you do this on a larger scale? I have a 1 foot deep, 2 foot wide, 6 foot long galvanized water trough. First off, is it too shallow? I want to plant tomatoes in it. Second, does the soil just soak up water through the ground cover cloth? Third, what would be good to use in the bottom since it’s only a foot deep?

    Thanks,
    Renee

  46. Nomad on April 25, 2021 at 12:43 am

Those buckets won’t even last a summer where I live unless you paint them, and that only buys you a couple of years.
