Taking The Emergency Exit From A Wind Turbine

Taking The Emergency Exit From A Wind Turbine

Wind turbines have emergency exits, but they might not be for the reason you think. โ€ข Thanks to Octopus Energy: https://octopus.energy/octopus-fan-club/ (This video isn’t sponsored, but obviously they did let me go up their wind turbine.)

Imagine having to jump from there like that pic of those workers stuck on a wind turbine on fire.

Whoโ€™s watching this after the pandemic? ๐Ÿ˜ท

  3. Woodape on May 12, 2021 at 12:27 am

why i hate wind turbines..they cannot replace oil and gas as a power source because they do not generate enough power….they are massive machines that require a ton of fossil fuel just to manufacture, install, and maintain.
They fill the landscape and when they e are are turning they have a huge effect on birds.
ITS BEYOND STUPID TO THINK THAT WIND POWER IS THE ANSWER

Now do it in the dark during an ice storm with 60 kmph wind.

There are indeed many many dangerous situations in this industry. And never climb on a ladder with a other guy unless it has to be that way AND there is closed hatch between the two. Never unhook someone else if you don’t really have to ( for several reasons).

Meanwhile Fred Dibnah would have gone up the outide with his own ladders and no ropes and only a flatcap and a packet of woodbines for protection

  24. goalie2998 on May 12, 2021 at 12:57 am

Assuming someone is incapacitated enough to require being lowered, the placement of the emergency exit, being up a ladder seems impractical.
I will never have to worry about that. As I wouldnt go up one of these if there was a bag of cash at the top.

  25. Richard E on May 12, 2021 at 12:58 am

you need to have a lot of faith in the coworkers who are lowering you down! a bungee would be more fun!

  29. poetcomic1 on May 12, 2021 at 1:02 am

These monstrosities have to be manufactured and hauled by huge trucks into place and after about ten years they fail and must be hauled away again and the net savings on CO2 are probably NEGATIVE and on top of that they kill birds by the millions and turn the great open plains into Robot Land.

One thing for sure turbines will never leave a carbon footprint.

I couldn’t find a way to fit this into the video, but rather wonderfully, this turbine is called Octopus Energy’s "#1 Fan". Thanks to all the team there, and the rope access team at EWT. This wasn’t sponsored, and Octopus had no control over the final video, but obviously they did let me go up their conveniently-branded wind turbine in an effort to boost their brand. (If any other companies would like to show me around their conveniently-branded spectacular facilities, they should definitely get in touch…!)

When I was in highschool 20 years ago, we visited a wind turbine as part a science project. It wasn’t as high as this one, but the view from the top was just as brilliant ๐Ÿ™‚
