Best Seed Storage System I've EVER Used!

Best Seed Storage System I've EVER Used!

My seed collection keeps growing at an EPIC pace, so I’ve had to evolve my seed storage ideas. I used to use a jewelry box, but there were a ton of problems with it, so I’ve swapped over to these photo storage boxes that I found on Amazon:

I use these photo bins also & I love them. I have 2 clear (warm & cool season) and 1 colorful one for flowers. Mine are all labeled like that too.

I’m a 67 year old farmer. Seeds keep forever. Keep them dry and they are good.

  3. Sage Preaumx on June 21, 2021 at 1:24 am

I’m curious. I find a poor germination rate from Baker Seed Company. I miss the variety but if they don’t germinate than it’s a waste all around.
I store my packets in shoe boxes and the seeds I harvest are stored in my own seed envelopes out of junk mail.

    Great for companion planting! Thanks!

Please link the raised bed stand/shelves with grow light in this video. It’s contemporary and looks organized.

  6. Puffx on June 21, 2021 at 1:25 am

I just scored one of those photo organizers from joanns for $25! It is amazing. Wish I bought two!

Why, why, why do you waste money on new seeds. Just save them from the year before! I was pulling my hair out looking at all those store-bought seeds😱😱😠

  9. MissJoaniB on June 21, 2021 at 1:28 am

As a newbie in Zone 3, I really really appreciate that you mention the different zone considerations. I also like that, with this method, you don’t lose the package information!

  10. gonzo191 on June 21, 2021 at 1:31 am

I just create a foil pocket per seed variety, then store in ziploc and store either at a cool temp or in freezer and have had no issues. It’s way smaller than the packets you buy from the store so i saves on space.

  11. Victor Wadsworth on June 21, 2021 at 1:31 am

    I reuse those Kool-Aid packets.

  12. Daphne V on June 21, 2021 at 1:31 am

I do not have that many seeds yet so I use photo album to store my packets 😀

  13. The Philosopher on June 21, 2021 at 1:33 am

    Great thing at great price.

  14. derpty420 lerp on June 21, 2021 at 1:34 am

Hello Kevin. I can’t seem to find any information on where you buy your seeds, am I missing it? If so can you tell me where you get them from? Thanks in advance.

  15. stingme16 on June 21, 2021 at 1:35 am

If anyone is here on 8/31/20 these photo cases are on sale at Michael’s right now

  16. Crystal Ross on June 21, 2021 at 1:36 am

Did you put any silica packets in there? Or would you?

  17. Maggie Manzke on June 21, 2021 at 1:37 am

As a beginner with one 4’x4′ bed, all my seeds fit in one quart-sized zipper baggie, in my fridge. If I ever have more than that, this system appeals to my hyper-organized self. Thanks!

  18. Mary Campbell on June 21, 2021 at 1:39 am

Awesome I purchased one and I love it!!

  19. Just Like TT mmm on June 21, 2021 at 1:39 am

For my regular sized seed packages, I close the opening with clips if I opened that seed bag already. I store all of them in a small cardboard box. I have this large bag of strawberry bulbs that don’t fit in there so I put it in an empty frozen veggie bag that can reseal at the top, like a ziploc bag that I didn’t have to pay extra for.

  20. Cee Maam on June 21, 2021 at 1:40 am

    Why not buy seed vials

  21. Kit DuBhran on June 21, 2021 at 1:41 am

I just saw another YouTuber storing seeds this way. Must be a sign that I need to grab another one of those guys the next time I’m at Michaels. Great video!

  22. Guy North on June 21, 2021 at 1:42 am

Speaking of seeds, cut into a tomato today and all the seeds had sprouted, never saw that before, certainly was crunchy. Yes going to try to grow a few.

  23. Martín on June 21, 2021 at 1:43 am

My father always used a huge metal tin (the macadamia nut ones from hawaii) and he would organize them inside of it with plastic bags by groups with the envelopes inside! very similar method but not quite as clean. Only way to upgrade you method that I would recommend is refrigeration

  24. Bailey Essentials on June 21, 2021 at 1:43 am

Michaels has these on sale right now! I bought 3! Hope it’s enough for all my seeds!😬😜

  25. Mindy T on June 21, 2021 at 1:44 am

Dude! What is this grow light shelf behind you, I want to buy one!

  26. Penny Lane on June 21, 2021 at 1:44 am

    That is a brilliant idea!

  27. Jessica Smith on June 21, 2021 at 1:47 am

Do you happen to store silica packets and/or clay tablets to keep moisture from seeds?

  28. RAGE OWL on June 21, 2021 at 1:49 am

I’m starting a catalog for my cannabis seeds..so far up to 25 different kinds I keep them in small glass jars with a screwtop or a cork top…each jar is labeled by numbers

  29. ashim k mukherjee on June 21, 2021 at 1:50 am

Sir can you please give me some of your seeds as I want to do gardening

  30. Mahi Wahoo on June 21, 2021 at 1:52 am

Kevin is the real life version of seedos from viva piñata.

  31. Ailsa Marshall on June 21, 2021 at 1:54 am

So spooky the last video I watched was the one you recommend for seed storage. Just added it to my shopping basket on amazon uk. I intend to label mine also putting the month to sow, then at a glance I will see when to sew them.

  32. Studio 96315 on June 21, 2021 at 1:54 am

There are video’s on how to make your own oxygenated packages. (Desiccant). Find one that works for you. I’m southern Alberta and we have low humidity so I don’t use them. Happy growing.

  33. Thomas Fuchs on June 21, 2021 at 1:55 am

I just saw a great picture on facebook about using a photoalbum to store seeds. You know the ones with transparent pockets to slide pictures into. You end up with a handy book and can still read the package without taking it out.

  34. Stephanie Vineyard on June 21, 2021 at 1:55 am

"Come along with my seed briefcase." Best line hahaha

  35. jinde75 on June 21, 2021 at 1:56 am

This year I sorted my seeds into months. I used to forget seed. Especially in months like September for something that comes up in March. I’ve written it in my garden notebook and I also have months where I write what perrenials to harvest that month and what I have sown that year. Some months have bulky containers, July-September is just a couple of packages but that’ll change because some seeda you can sow twice a year. I’m really excited about the coming year.

  36. Faerie Thompson on June 21, 2021 at 1:56 am

Thank you for a great suggestion. I’ve already ordered mine. Like you, I’m also zone 10b and I really appreciate your viewpoint.

  37. mandy deane on June 21, 2021 at 1:57 am

How many seed packets can be held in those plastic cases?

  38. Alice Bedwell on June 21, 2021 at 1:59 am

Love ya man! I have a kitchen drawer full of seeds!

  39. K Wheatley on June 21, 2021 at 2:00 am

Says he went full obessive compulsive….nope…they are not alphabetized.lol Great idea tho ; )

  40. John Jones on June 21, 2021 at 2:00 am

I’m transferring to the way you mentioned. My question is how do you store 1lb & bigger amounts? Beans corn peas are all over 2lbs

  41. Heather H on June 21, 2021 at 2:03 am

Thanks to this video, after I ordered a metric butt ton of seeds that I don’t even have enough space to plant seedlings in yet, I ordered my first box like this. I need to get a second one but I have to wait until all of my seeds come in to determine if I need more than one for now. Also, I LOVVVVE labeling stuff. Like OCD style so this is great! 🙂

  42. Pappy Winie on June 21, 2021 at 2:03 am

Hello Kevin! I’m just a beginner! Tried to buy your book from amazon.com but it says it does not ship to Malaysia. Is there any other alternative to get one?

  43. Sarika Sabnis on June 21, 2021 at 2:03 am

lol pretty sure Michaels saw this video, because they are on the sale this year hahaha

  44. Jeff Hurst on June 21, 2021 at 2:06 am

Love the seed storing container idea. Will get it. Thanks for link.

  45. oscar caballero on June 21, 2021 at 2:06 am

I did not know that existed, you just blew my mind. I have gone from paperclips,to shoe boxes and test tubes to baseball card envelopes…nothing works thanks

  46. Kate D on June 21, 2021 at 2:07 am

i can’t believe you didn’t see the problem with the first storage version, that’s the first thing i thought…how are you going to get the seeds out? there are little containers, like what restaurants use for to go sauces, you can write on the lids. waaay cheaper. you have so many seeds, you’d have to have so many….i only use these little containers for the harvested seeds

  47. T B on June 21, 2021 at 2:10 am

One quick garden hack is to use those medication boxes that have am pm for the week and use them for plug plants and sowings .

  48. Emiliapocalypse on June 21, 2021 at 2:14 am

Great system! I had a mouse problem this winter and the lil buggers found their way into my plant room and made a mukbang of all my seeds. This would help protect them 🙂 cheers

  49. evoandy on June 21, 2021 at 2:14 am
