  16. Ken Fullman on June 29, 2021 at 1:42 am

The reason that water stays warmer than the surrounding air is due to a strange property of water. You see water has it’s highest density at 4 C degrees above zero. Which means as it’s temperature get’s lower than 4 C degrees, it becomes less dense. This is why ice floats on water.

Now if you have a body of water at say, 30 degrees, then as water is cooled on the surface it’s density increases. So the cooler water will drop down into the main body of the water and be replaced by warmer water below. This causes convection currents whereby the whole body of water gets cooled. (warmer water in this range is less dense than the cooled water)

This convection no longer happens, however, once the temperature drops below 4 degrees centigrade. Now when it gets cooled it’s density actually decreases. So it remains on the surface, leaving the water below totally untouched by this cooling effect.

Growing up on the mobile tensaw river Delta in Alabama.. I gotta say… Alligators have always been my favorite animal.. however it doesn’t get very cold down here and I’ve never seen this behavior.. I’m glad I watched this… Because had I’d seen it prior to this video.. I’d have tried to rescue them

  27. Cliff Campbell on June 29, 2021 at 2:02 am

#1, the thumbnail picture is of an alligator, not a crocodile and #2, crocodiles cannot hibernate, the cold would more than likely kill them.

  28. Derrick Dilshan on June 29, 2021 at 2:04 am

I’m basically a walking barometer myself. Pained lungs (more so than normal) means a cold front, previously popped cartilage stabbing on top of that means a heavy thunderstorm is on its way
