Quick Start Guide to Growing Food in Containers

Quick Start Guide to Growing Food in Containers

Last week I introduced you to the idea of a Rapid Response Victory Garden, and in it, I introduced container gardening. Of all the ways you can build a garden FAST, containers, large pots, and large planters are the way to go. They’re easier to source, build, and fill than raised beds, and you can set them up wherever you have a sunny place. That includes balconies, small patios, and other small outdoor spaces.

This video is an introduction to growing food in containers. I share a little background on the home garden, what I have growing on my patio, as well as these tips that you can use for your own set-up:

➤ Vegetables you can grow in containers
➤ Some of the different types of containers you can use
➤ The easiest potting mixture for vegetables and salad.
➤ Guidance on the potting mixture for perennials and herbs
➤ Tips on how to grow salads and greens in shallow containers

I really want to grow veg. The problem I have is that my garden has a really bad slug problem. I’ve thought about raised beds but how can I stop the slugs eating the crop? I have 2 dogs so I am unsure what I can do to deter them. I successfully grew some Pak Choi in a container one year but the slugs devoured it. :0(

  24. Laurent Jouvin on July 19, 2021 at 3:02 am

Hey Tanya. No matter what I do, water is accumulating at the bottom of my pots and my roots end up rotting. For some reason, it doesn’t drain properly. I make my own potting soil with some compost, tourbe peat moss, sand and dirt, mulch, and some pumice. I heard about potting soil becoming hydrophobic. What do you think is happening here? Any advice? Thanks!

Thankyou for the informative and inspiring video.. Im new to gardening and also live in a rented flat with a small ‘garden’. planting in pots will be ideal, though somewhat bamboozling to me at first – just find out the basics. i suppose, the right pots, soil, and how to start the seeds off, and when to plant. Sunlight is only direct for a few hours a day. and so there are some small concerns, though i think maybe just get outside and try it. thanks

Where are you from? Your accent is interesting. You sound like someone who has lived outside of your native country for a long time. Or you have a strong regional accent.

Beautiful video! I have a question. When you planted your potatoes in your empty soil bags did you line them with black plastic? Or just use them the way they were?

  34. Kat Trabue on July 19, 2021 at 3:10 am

My mind does NOT think of fruits and veg when someone says "edibles".

How deep does a raised bed have to be? I’m going to grow vegetables on my terrace and have bis built two 50cm deep raised beds and wonder if it needs to be that deep? I’m also wondering what to plant… lettuce, tomatoes, zucchini, peas, beans, cucumber, leeks, spring onions, potatoes and herbs seem to be a good idea (living in hamburg/Germany). What do you think? Anything else that would work in this rainy and only moderately warm climate?
