How To Turn A Small Backyard Into An Elegant Oasis

How To Turn A Small Backyard Into An Elegant Oasis

Living in the city has its perks, but having a home with a big backyard isn’t one of them. Horticultural landscape technician Joshua Hollander proves that a lack of square-footage doesn’t mean a lack of potential. Get backyard landscaping ideas and learn how he transforms a small backyard into an elegant outdoor space perfect for summer entertaining.

Over two summers, Joshua made a variety of savvy changes to the urban area. He divided the space into different zones, including a backyard patio, intimate seating area, lounge section and surrounding gardens. Tall trees and a custom cedar screen add privacy, while low-maintenance plants offer easy elegance. Other decorative features include boxwood hedge and ornamental grass. Soft lighting adds a glow after-dark, making the backyard ideal for entertaining after sundown.

Artificial grass, looks nice and it’s almost maintenance-free but during summertime, it retains too much heat! amazing amount of heat!

Will the artificial turf hold up to dogs? Would like more info on that brand.

Beautiful job. I’ve never seen artificial grass so good. Can you share where I can get that artificial grass for my backyard?
    Thank you in advance.

Next time take a BEFORE picture and then present the AFTER picture….instead of describing the CHANGE in very long narrative……Just suggesting..No,offense meant..

Nice garden but no privacy due to the neigbors’ door and windows looking right onto the property.

  27. Nallely Mejia on August 21, 2021 at 10:22 pm

Pyramidal European Hornbeam- don’t they get to be really tall? Over 20 ft? I would be afraid to use so many since the yard is not that big.

    Nice job Josh!

  34. Queen Bee on August 21, 2021 at 10:36 pm

That was terrible planning for them to put in European hornbeam trees. Those things get 40 ft tall and 30 ft wide eventually which means the homeowners are going to have to remove them in the are they will swallow the small space and their neighbors space.

  35. EEE on August 21, 2021 at 10:36 pm

@Joshua Hollander, you should start your own landscaping YouTube channel. Your work is phenomenal.

  36. Rami Khirfan on August 21, 2021 at 10:36 pm

Nice elegant job. But I always like to consider the weatherproof strategies like when you have hot sunny days, or at very cold icy days. I hope you could eleborate on these elements how do you overcome them.

Just wanted to see the garden and not have to watch the guy, his voice is enough

  38. Wild River on August 21, 2021 at 10:42 pm

They said everything is bigger in America, and now I believe it.
This "small" backyard is bigger than my house

  47. Giulio Arti on August 21, 2021 at 10:51 pm

The lighting on the trees is beautiful

  48. acay on August 21, 2021 at 10:51 pm

Ok. His idea of "small" and mine radically differ. 😒Any ideas for "tiny" back yard? 😩

  49. csenuber on August 21, 2021 at 10:51 pm

Show us less of Joshua’s bold head and more results. Night lighting is great. Day time garden feels bold and uninteresting.

wish we could have seen the before space and then the after…….
