Growing food with zero heating in Massachusetts' winter

Growing food with zero heating in Massachusetts' winter

Jonathan Bates is better known for the food forest him and his colleague Eric Toensmeier planted on their 1/10th of an acre urban lot in Holyoke, Massachusetts. When I visited him in February, most of the lot and its 200 plant species were still covered with snow, but Jonathan showed me around their eco-shelter. Thanks to good insulation and thermal mass, the passive greenhouse maintains above freezing temperatures all winter, and allows them to grow food throughout the year.

What fish are you raising in your aquaculture

  2. Rick Stewart on November 17, 2021 at 11:37 am

HAHAHA, keep your global worming fantasies going. Maybe they will keep you warm in the winter.

The Earth has cycles. There is no global cooling, warming, or climate change… it’s the Earth’s natural cycle.

That’s nice that he can have his green house and chickens in the town. I like they he says global warming is still up for debate. That’s so much better than the quacks saying global warming is a fact no time to debate it. Respect to this guy for sharing his knowledge.

Al gore told me the polar bears would be extinct in 10 years. We have more of them now.

So is the insulation transparent? Because plastic is not very insulating! How is he getting such good insulation AND so much light?

  9. Christy Velhho on November 17, 2021 at 11:47 am

Would love his contact information…I have a greenhouse and would love assistance in setting it up so I too can enjoy year round growing.

Good video. You Can grow Citrus in Mass. They do in "Greenhouse in the snow" NE.
How warm is it there in the winter, has cilmate change warmed up much in the last four years?

7 years in to your 10 year prediction and it was 6F the other night here – how’s that global warming working for you?

  17. jim h on November 17, 2021 at 11:55 am

    Global warming.????
During the history of our planet
It has gone through heating and cooling cycles
At a point in time the Artic and Antarctic were Tropic Forests..
Thru tracking the recorded sun spots.. They have recorded heating and cooling cycles on earth…

  19. darthvader5300 on November 17, 2021 at 11:56 am

The aimals and brids should be inside the greenhouse so that their body heat and wastes can be used as direct sources of heat and fertilizer and produce carbon dioxide for the plants to breath in and exhale oxygen for the animals and birds.

Everything was good until you said global warming.

  33. whifling on November 17, 2021 at 12:15 pm

As far as climate chagne goes, I’m more worried about the winters getting colder and wetter and the summers being hotter and drier 🙁

  34. Suzette Robinson on November 17, 2021 at 12:16 pm

I love your design and reuse of materials, and the in ground worm farm is awesome. I would look into Grand Solar Minimum (a 200ish year natural cycle) as opposed to global warming. We are experiencing all the historical symptoms. Greenhouses that are energy efficient and can withstand cold will be critical.

  35. Patrice Verrochi on November 17, 2021 at 12:17 pm

Global warming is here already man… Think about it, Mass the first frost is predicted ( in Boston) on Dec 16! Spring doesn’t start until end of May and winter starts in Dec. IDK it’s like the calendar has shifted

  36. Maly Nda on November 17, 2021 at 12:19 pm

How’s that avocado plant doing man? People are brainwashed. LOL!

  37. Rebel Studio2 on November 17, 2021 at 12:19 pm

Your masters are lying to you. In the 1970’s and said that we are heading for an ice age. Then they needed to change that and say global warming to use it as an excuse to block what the plants and we need from the sun to kill us off. The Georgia Guidestons was created in 1979 and erected in 1980 by Ted Turner. CNN was put up next to it. They want to get the world’s population down to 500,000,000 to be able to sustain their control and power positions. They are using our ignorance against us all. To get us to be ok with billions dying for a false sense of protecting the planet. That is GOD’s job. Not ours. We need to save ourselves and the planet from them. They are the destroyers of mankind and the planet. All life is carbon based. To get to of carbon. ALL life has to be eliminated.

…8 years later and you still cannot grow an avocado outdoors year-round in MA…

    …Hansen’s (1988) predictions of temperature rise 1988-2020:

Scenario A ("Business as Usual"): +1.5degC
Scenario B ("Reduced linear growth of trace gases"): +1.1degC
Scenario C ("Rapid curtailment of trace gas emissions"): +0.6degC

    Actual rise per GISS: 0.5degC…

Even under the floor board the space is being utilized (worm farm). Thank you for the ideas!

  41. darthvader5300 on November 17, 2021 at 12:21 pm

Global warming is happening? IS THIS GUY NUTS OR PLAIN INSANE? We Russians have lost more than 200 towns and villages in this year of 2019 due to increasing cold and snow and glacial ice build up and movements and it reached the point that we have to use, at first, surplus keresone fuelled jet engines to clear the snow and ice from our roads and railways and land boundary zones. Now we have to release and use, under military control, our massive stockpiles of MSR reactor powered dual-heat exchanger turbine generator engines not just to produce electricity but to generate superheated air streams through a vortex nozzle to blast and push back the glaciers and stop their continuous movements by continously melting them as they move forward and not just at the front but also at the flanks!

  42. Deborah Zahler on November 17, 2021 at 12:23 pm

Great for your success with year round growing!!!If your temperature dipped further say 25 30 below ??
Do you have a back up system for heat ? Even if only short term. Thsnks
