I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore! Speech from Network (1080p)

I don’t have to tell you things are bad. Everybody knows things are bad. It’s a depression. Everybody’s out of work or scared of losing their job. The dollar buys a nickel’s worth, banks are going bust, shopkeepers keep a gun under the counter. Punks are running wild in the street and there’s nobody anywhere who seems to know what to do, and there’s no end to it. We know the air is unfit to breathe and our food is unfit to eat, and we sit watching our TV’s while some local newscaster tells us that today we had fifteen homicides and sixty-three violent crimes, as if that’s the way it’s supposed to be. We know things are bad – worse than bad. They’re crazy. It’s like everything everywhere is going crazy, so we don’t go out anymore. We sit in the house, and slowly the world we are living in is getting smaller, and all we say is, ‘Please, at least leave us alone in our living rooms. Let me have my toaster and my TV and my steel-belted radials and I won’t say anything. Just leave us alone.’ Well, I’m not gonna leave you alone. I want you to get mad! I don’t want you to protest. I don’t want you to riot – I don’t want you to write to your congressman because I wouldn’t know what to tell you to write. I don’t know what to do about the depression and the inflation and the Russians and the crime in the street. All I know is that first you’ve got to get mad. You’ve got to say, ‘I’m a HUMAN BEING, God damn it! My life has VALUE!’ So I want you to get up now. I want all of you to get up out of your chairs. I want you to get up right now and go to the window. Open it, and stick your head out, and yell, ‘I’M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I’M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!’ I want you to get up right now, sit up, go to your windows, open them and stick your head out and yell – ‘I’m as mad as hell and I’m not going to take this anymore!’ Things have got to change. But first, you’ve gotta get mad!… You’ve got to say, ‘I’m as mad as hell, and I’m not going to take this anymore!’ Then we’ll figure out what to do about the depression and the inflation and the oil crisis. But first get up out of your chairs, open the window, stick your head out, and yell, and say it: “I’M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I’M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!”

The brother screams the truth and the news studio is pretty much doing what he is preaching against. They are happy for the increase in rating from watchers and profit from them not the message. The irony of this scene.

It’s funny that out of context this scene seems like an empowering triumph, when in context it’s actually about a network station taking advantage of a person’s mental deterioration for ratings.

Bunch of pussies in here whining cause you had to stay inside, or cause you needed a free vaccine.

Id not heard of this film until sometime in the 1990s when I stumbled across it on TV one night, this scene always stuck in my mind. Years later I watched it and realised the significance of the film as a classic

Holy hell. This is staggering to see after all these years and hearing the news of the subway rider in Philly who was raped for26 stops while folks recorded the act on phones, but NONE of those soulless witnesses pressed 911. I’m afraid we’re all out of Peter Finches. ‘Network’ blew my high schooler mind in 1976. So sad that we’re back… unimaginable.

2021… things are bad. we’re all depressed. either out of work or living on unemployment because unemployment pays better. so there’s a staffing shortage and the rest of us that are working are scared the place we work for is going to shut down because they can’t find enough people to keep the business running. inflation is on the rise. 2A nuts are grabbing and hording dozens of guns and pallets of ammo so the rest of us cant hardly find a single gun and magazine-worth of ammo without it costing a month’s salary. racist cops are killing us and nobody seems to know what to do because if we defund the police crime goes sky high but if we fund the police they kill us when our hands are empty and on our heads. there’s no end to that vicious cycle of catch 22. we wear masks with pores larger than 30 microns as if that’s going to protect us from a virus that’s 0.12 microns. our food is loaded with hfcs and artificial this and that, diabetes and cancer are on the rise because of it, and we buy the shit because that’s all we can afford. we sit watching sleepy-eyed joe telling us how good things are going in afghanistan as if daily casualty reports is the way it’s supposed to be. the smart ones among us know you’re supposed to evacuate the civilians before you withdraw the troops by an artificial date. we see through the smoke and around the mirrors and know socialist veep is really the one in control of biden. some of us see past trump’s lies and machinations too! the world has gone nuts so we isolate in unreasonable fear (if you’re sick stay home, if you’re susceptible take precautions, beyond that is insanity) and the lack of social interaction makes us anti-social and cynical so that even an honest pure act of kindness is received with suspicions of what they’re REALLY trying to take from us. even when the communication is electronic we’ve forgotten the common courtesy of acknowledging that someone bothered to say hello and ask about our well being. and just like the scene written in 1976, i don’t want a repeat of 6 jan that was clearly egged on by his majesty the orange. idk what to do about the russians or the chinese or the crime in washington dc. except that we first need to wake the fuck up and tell EVERY incumbent politician that they’re crooked as a barrel of snakes and we don’t want them in office any more! when we vote in our primaries we need to vote for whoever is not the incumbent. and when we vote in the general we need to look past party and look at what they stand for. not what they SAY they stand for, not the lies they tell us to win an election, but what they actually stand for, and vote based on that. and if every candidate is a piece of shit, write in a vote for rex reagan or buddy clinton. because compared to now, those were the days weren’t they?
