How to Install Landscape Fabric Like a Pro

How to Install Landscape Fabric Like a Pro

What is the best way to get rid of weeds in a flowerbed?! STOP THEM BEFORE THEY START!!

This is a great DIY project for keeping troublesome weeds out of your flower beds, gravel areas, under patios, synthetic turf, you name it!!

Beware of the big box stores though… “weed barriers” that you can see through aren’t worth a dime. Use the materials that the Pro’s do and make sure the job is done right!! As with all aspects of landscaping… If you want the best results, PREPARATION IS KEYYYY!!!!

At your request here are some links to the products I used or recommend using to tackle this project….

https://amzn.to/3hrsPVi – Professional Grade 5oz. Landscape Fabric (Fabric Tensile strength is measured in ounces the higher the ounces the stronger the material… Personally, I wouldn’t use anything less than 5 oz for a successful installation). Once you click on this link you have the choice to buy this fabric in different lengths and widths depending on your application purposes. Please choose the best option for your needs but don’t forget to account for fabric overlap and possible mistakes…better to have some leftover than not enough.

https://amzn.to/2PLsOxw – Professional Grade (Heavy Duty) Landscape Staples that far surpasses anything you could find at a big box store.

https://amzn.to/37cL1er – Durable Dead Blow Mallet

  12. Romany Kemp on May 29, 2022 at 8:31 pm

This kind of fabric was used to do the landscaping when I purchased my house 20 years ago – and it is still in great shape. I was looking around to see where I could buy something similar – and landed on this young man. Very helpful!

To the point. I like it.

  14. Cumbaja on May 29, 2022 at 8:36 pm

As a professional landscaper i discourage fabric for many reasons, It just does not belong in a natural landscape.

  15. Daniel Allen on May 29, 2022 at 8:40 pm

Unless u double up with the fabric, weeds always find a way through these. But great info

  16. Caren Allen on May 29, 2022 at 8:40 pm

I made my own staples..coat hangers..cut with wire cutters bend into stapes..cheep and worked just fine

  21. ANTO MANO on May 29, 2022 at 8:43 pm

Can you have 2 or 3 layers across on top of each for additional protection (not for overlapping purposes)? I have that type of fabric and still get plenty of weeds growing. Will it still drain properly with 2 or the 3 layers? Thanks.

  22. QueenOfRavens on May 29, 2022 at 8:44 pm

Snap. As a first timer, I ended up buying this stuff for my landscaping needs…. i feel fortunate and confident in my recent job.
I’m inspired to put in a rock walkway…landscaping is really fun when it’s the homefront.

    Good video

  26. Cody Lovelace on May 29, 2022 at 8:51 pm

Weeds will pop right up along the edging and the house. You should bring it up a couple inches on the edges to help with this.

  27. Dame Hinojosa on May 29, 2022 at 8:54 pm

I don’t get a lot of rain here in california. do you think a black plastic thats not woven would work? I want to put gravel on top. Its a front lawn. thanks for video

  28. Thee_ JoKers on May 29, 2022 at 8:55 pm

How did you get the fabric around that tree so tight? It looks like you cut a small hole and pull it over, down, and around that tree. Any tips how to do that??

  29. Valerie Mesker on May 29, 2022 at 8:55 pm

Where do you buy the plastic

  30. Mex Pumas on May 29, 2022 at 8:57 pm

  32. slayerwatcher on May 29, 2022 at 9:01 pm

Great video. Can you lay this material down and then cover with topsoil and plant flowers above the woven fabric? Thanks…

  33. Mike V on May 29, 2022 at 9:04 pm

Great video and very informative and clear explanation. our garden bed is Sandy soil and very soft. Can I use the fabric in your video or need something else? The ground in your video seems quite hard. It’s easy to lay the fabric. Thanks a lot!

  36. Les Selavie on May 29, 2022 at 9:07 pm

Thanks for the links…ill try it

  37. Jeff Maas on May 29, 2022 at 9:07 pm

Wow…you must have very soft soil. I try to pound the staple in and it bends.

  38. John the texas Gardener on May 29, 2022 at 9:08 pm

Thank you best video I seen. Most video guy always talking about stuff not related to subject

  39. Jimmy on May 29, 2022 at 9:10 pm

Shame everywhere I need it has a hedge or plant every two feet

  40. Tracy Keeney on May 29, 2022 at 9:12 pm

Just what I was looking for! Thank you!! Question though – you suggested NOT getting the landscape fabric and staples from a "big box store". Where DO you get it from then? Just a ‘smaller" store? Is that something like True Value? Or is there some kind of specialty landscaping store you’d recommend? Thanks!

  41. Lordcron on May 29, 2022 at 9:14 pm

    Great video!

  42. Rebecca White on May 29, 2022 at 9:14 pm

    What IS your area?

  43. Bruce Almighty on May 29, 2022 at 9:15 pm

Great video, but definitely work on improving audio quality.

  44. jay marley on May 29, 2022 at 9:15 pm

How many feet do you want to did before you lay the fabric

  45. Shahida Sohail on May 29, 2022 at 9:15 pm

Hi how do you feed fertilizer after covering the surrounding of the plants? Do you have to remove the fabric, feed and cover back every time. Also can we cover this fabric by spreading mulch on top? Will it prevent weed from growing?

  46. The Aural Alchemist on May 29, 2022 at 9:16 pm

Instead of cutting holes to place your plants use a torch to burn holes. It will prevent the fabric from fraying and make planting easier.

  47. frente2zapatista on May 29, 2022 at 9:17 pm

Thanks you for the information and tutorial, am attempting to order the fabric through your affiliate link but the price for the 5×250 roll was $99 and once I put it in the cart minutes later it showed to be unavailable, but at the same time available with a new price of $119. The fabric doesn’t show to have a brand meaning the seller can ship whatever they please. Do you have another link ?

  48. Nina Williams on May 29, 2022 at 9:17 pm

This is ridiculous. How do you plant plants in this and what about the sprinkler heads?

  49. Ronel Brown on May 29, 2022 at 9:20 pm

What if I’m putting it in with plants and shrubs already there should I just pull the weeds and grass that’s already there.

  50. Fraser Kerr on May 29, 2022 at 9:20 pm

This is the fabric I’m looking to use for my garden to put gravel on top of, great video 👍
