DIY Water Bottle Hydroponic System for Propagating and Herbs

DIY Water Bottle Hydroponic System for Propagating and Herbs

Learning how to make a hydroponic system doesn’t have to be hard – in fact, this is barely a tutorial at all! I used heavy duty 1″ net pots from my friend CZ Garden, who sponsored this video, to make the simplest repurposed water bottle kratky system that I could imagine.

It’s perfect for propagating, growing herbs, or taking cuttings of your houseplants. Better yet, these little net pots are so cheap that you’re only limited by your creativity. DIY cloning systems with these would be a breeze to make.

What’s the size of the net pot?

  2. Jessica Jacksha on July 4, 2022 at 10:46 pm

I just put my cuttings into a bottle of water and they all seemed to root just fine.

    @Epic Gardening
glass jars work alot better as they have more weight which means you can grow a bigger plant
cotton balls could work out alot better than the coco mix as medium, just found a similar type on ebay seem quite useful for propagation to harvest

  12. Rhea M on July 4, 2022 at 10:55 pm

hi im kinda very new to this, can i ask what kind of soil did you use? And did you put something in it? thank you a lot 🙂

  13. Hydro Haven on July 4, 2022 at 10:55 pm

Nice, CZ 1" is my go-to. I cut 1.5" rockwool in 1/4’s. I do it more for cost savings. Funny, I tried to seed something in coco… packed it too tight, will try again.

  14. Stevia Leaves farmar on July 4, 2022 at 11:02 pm

    Witch chemical mix in

  15. Chikalu korkwati on July 4, 2022 at 11:05 pm

would this work without the soil? can you have the cutting hanging just above the water and allow it to evaporate straight onto the suspended cutting?

  16. Ron Ner on July 4, 2022 at 11:10 pm

I’ll use it on my Salad?? Your funny!

Couldnt you just diy the rooting pot with a little creamer cup with some slits cut in it?

  27. Lana C on July 4, 2022 at 11:18 pm

You can also use an extended water bottle cap with holes in it instead of the net pot

  28. Jack Bax on July 4, 2022 at 11:21 pm

Would you use rooting hormone here? BTW love you and your videos.

  29. Cherelle Jacob on July 4, 2022 at 11:21 pm

I should have asked this week’s ago. Lollllllllllllllllllllllll! I know nada about plants. We did these in my classroom. What do we do once they have roots?! Lol. Do we just plant them like this, or do we cut them out and plant them? Do they stay in the bottles? (Ahhhhhh!) Help! 🙂 FYI, they loved this!

  30. Valerie Sanchez on July 4, 2022 at 11:22 pm

I been experimenting with cotton balls for starting seeds.
Place them in q little net pot,
Insert my seeds, wet the cotton and place in sealed container.
So that way I just pop in my reservoir and plants good to go.
    Way cheaper than rockwool.

  31. Nathan 1 on July 4, 2022 at 11:23 pm

Can we just put aluminum foil to cover the water. Will this also help in making ng water stay a little bit cool when expose in sun

  32. Samantha Leon on July 4, 2022 at 11:25 pm

    Plastic shot glasses also work

  33. sohail alam on July 4, 2022 at 11:25 pm

  38. sheetal narang on July 4, 2022 at 11:33 pm

    Nice easy

  39. Da Vince on July 4, 2022 at 11:33 pm

You can use tiny bottles which stores small amount of water & nutrients instead of a huge bottle

  40. James Liew on July 4, 2022 at 11:33 pm

Wow! Amazing ideas. Always love your videos.
Have a lot of soda bottles, fruits packaging laying around the house. Will use them to grow many plants in high rise. 👍👍👍

  42. Gordon Sihombing on July 4, 2022 at 11:35 pm

I have a question as a rookie at hydroponics. My question is how much nutrients solution should I be adding for seedlings ?

  43. Saad Makkouk on July 4, 2022 at 11:35 pm

Hello, do you by any chance have a list of seeds which germinate the fastest? Thank you!

  44. Neil Cartwright on July 4, 2022 at 11:35 pm

Why doesn’t your sponsor change the design of his net pod so that it fits directly into the top of the bottle?

  45. Deborah Peck on July 4, 2022 at 11:36 pm

Would you have to keep this under a grow light until it roots??

  46. Virginia Bugbee on July 4, 2022 at 11:38 pm

Nope, CZ shorted my net pot order by almost half.

  47. Bored Eats on July 4, 2022 at 11:40 pm

i just hang them in asprin water

  48. Tim Magnus on July 4, 2022 at 11:41 pm

Thank you for the great video. I am going to use this with a gardening club during virtual learning. It would be great if you had a follow-up video of how it grows and the next transition.
