Garden Tools Review

Which tools are best for planting bulbs? Get an expert’s advice on the advantages of different types of hand tools.

In this video you’ll learn about a few of the most common tools for planting flower bulbs and which are best suited for your particular planting area.

The traditional bulb planter can be a nice tool to use for single bulb plantings, in very loose soil. Due to the awkward pressing motion of your thumb, this is not the highest recommended tool.

The little hand shovel, can be easier to use for single bulb plantings than the bulb planter and also works well in loose soil.

The hand trowel is our favorite tool for single bulb plantings due to its easy “picking” motion and it works well in both loose, or hard soil, where it can be difficult to get in. All you need to do is give the soil a couple of hits, plant your bulb, and cover it up.

The traditional shovel is a great tool and is best suited for planting larger quantities of bulbs. If you want to plant 10 or 15 bulbs in one grouping, then you’ll want to use the shovel.

I use an auger to plant bulbs, especially in tight places where I don’t have the room to use a shovel or move around much. Very effective. Sometimes I encounter stones which cause the drill to stall and I have to withdraw the auger and work around the stone.
