Strong & Self-Watering Wooden Planter Box (How to Grow Crops)
Strong & Self-Watering Wooden Planter Box (How to Grow Crops)
This is Part 3 of 3 of my Self-Watering Raised Planter Box series. In this final episode, I show you how to upgrade the raised wooden planter box we built from Part 1 and 2 into a fully functioning sub-irrigated planter (SIP) system or wicking bed.
In the entire series, I show you how to build a raised planter box for vegetables; an urban vegetable gardening for beginners. A DIY raised planter box with legs has many benefits: be more comfortable gardening standing straight instead of your back bent; protect your plants from ground-based animals; portability; and more control over soil and water when converted into a sub-irrigated planter.

I love your videos! They are sped up enough to not be too long but also slowed down enough to see what you are doing clearly! I have watched about 20 videos on sip systems and yours is the only ones that explained each step and why that left my confused in other videos. And explained it clearly and at a pace I could follow along and not have to replay certain parts. Thank you so much!!!
Great video. Thanks for sharing it.
Hey, thanks mate, i build 3 planterbox using your video, 2 raised and 1 grounded
For those who want a proper education, this is the right Chanel for you. Great stuff.
Do I really need gravel, May I used regular potting soil?
That duct tape will not hold up in the wet soil indefinitely, use duct clamps
Best video on a sip system!!! Thanks a million ❤️
You the man HanDIYman
How do you know when you need to top up with tater again?
Thank you so much! It taught me a lot for my projects!
Thanks for this video, I am going to give this a try from start to finish. Do you have to use a 2" PVC or can it be smaller? Did you use PVC primer and cemet as well? Lastly, what is the drill bit size that you used for the holes in the PVC?
How useful could I make this box with the water even though it is getting cold outside especially during the winter months
Starting to notice Koreans use this kind of box esp inside our apartment complex. 😂 can’t wait to have one too. I super like that self watering function.👏👏
Just adding an important note:test the gravel for PH first before putting them in. Those gravel might have limestone which affects the PH which then affects the growth of the plants. Quick way to test is using vinegar.
Very good system, the only thing I don’t understand is.. why not cap the end instead of using the mesh? When you water, wouldn’t most of the water be dumped out on the end of the opening with the mesh instead of going through the bottom holes?
I’m going to make a big one for flowers. Its swampy any hot here and everything is clay. Slightly modify to create drainage for me maybe.
good idea
Very nice
Thank you Sir👍👍👍👍👍
This is amazing. Thank you for sharing.
You are so smart , Thank You So Much , Love it
You did a great job! I’m definitely considering one of these now!
Congratulations on the production of this great video. You are very precise with clear instructions and explanations. So I subscribed to be sure to follow you with other projects. I am building a raised planter now and interested in installing the self watering system. However I have a question you probably cannot answer but perhaps one of your other viewers can provide some suggestions. I live in Canada so I have no problem with this system in the summer. However in the winter I am afraid the excess water in the box will freeze and expand. That could break or disconnect the PVC pipe and or push out the sides of the box due to the expanding pressure. I am thinking of putting in an extra external tap to the PVC pipe that can be opened to fully drain the pipe before freeze up. Any other comments or advice?
Where did you get your gravel from
r u selling it im interested
Excellent tutorial. Thanks for sharing
Any follow up on how this bed lasted and worked?
I’m really curious, why did you guys put gravel in the bottom instead of soil throughout? I don’t understand
Hi – thanks for these videos! so how do you know when it’s time to add water again? what about rain? that adds to the water level but then that’s what the drainage hole is for – which i assume only drains when the level of the water reaches a certain height – correct?
Interesting video I like how you managed to build the raised planter box without any fancy tools.
Thanks for showing that it’s possible.
It’s good to see Stodoys have new instructions to save my money and energy to build it.
Quick Question, Would it not be better to have the overflow pipe, that is coming out the side of the planter, drilled a few centimetres higher on only the box, this should make it flood the pipes higher before draining out and would supply more water into the soil and not just the gravel?
Thank you for your video.

I need this ❤️❤️❤️
I will be building one of these for my deck
Hello Handyman, first of all great series. thank you for sharing. I’m building a SIP according to your video. I have few questions if you’d be so kind to answer. I build 2 meters (6 foot) by 60 centimeters (24 inch) and 50 centimeters (20 inch) deep. I plan to use 16 centimeters (6.2 inch) pvc pipe so It could hold more water, is it ok? another thing is regarding the gravel. What are your recommendations on what kind of gravel to use? smaller stones? bigger stones? or maybe bigger stones on the bottom, smaller as I go up? What would work best for the system, to feed the water upward. Thank you.
how long have you not watered the planter?
Would smaller diameter pvc pipe work?
Thank you so much for these excellent videos. They are a gift! I just built a 3’0" x 3/4′ solid wood indoor planter box (see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6zxOpk2q8Tg&t=450s) and want it to be self-watering because I am frequently away from home several days at a time. I plan to skip the mesh because the walls are solid; use less PVC to distribute water evenly; and use smaller diameter PVC. I would greatly appreciate your thoughts on the PVC and anything else that comes to mind. Again, thank you for sharing your work!
Amazing video.. very well explained, and demonstrated.. I was having troubles before this video trying to lay the waterproof plastic so it was even and flush inside all surfaces inside the box. Your video explained it so well.. I look forward to watching your other videos now when I have time.. thank you so much
This is AWESOME! You just saved me a lot of money because other vids were saying I needed an all wood bottom. This system is brilliant. Can’t wait to try. 😁
Great video! Very well made. Think I am going to build one myself. Thank you for the time and effort and sharing
considered subcribing sayo kasi alam ko dami ko matutunan sa mga videos mo. thank you for sharing your tips. will watch your other videos na mga d.i.y. na dapat matutunan kahit mga babae kami
Quick question for you. If using the SIP system, should you still cut the slits in the liner for drainage that you did in the second video? Seems like you would not. Thank you!!!
Great videos! I’ve been wanting to build some like these. I’ll refer to your videos. Thanks!
Awesome build! Thank you for sharing. God bless you.

Excellent video thank you 🇨🇦
Where do I find the measurements for the bed?
How useful could this even though it is getting cold
I will do like your way, really like it… How long you fill up water again …
